It is often caused by degenerative disc disease, a progressive and irreversible condition that leads to a loss of disc height that can compress the spinal nerves and cause excruciating, intractable pain with devastating social consequences. Unfortunately, efforts to manage the condition\u2014such as using strong painkillers including addictive opioids and performing spinal fusion surgery\u2014are often inadequate.
